The great thing about China is you can bargain everything. Today we went to this underground mall where I bargained some pretty red puma’s for 60 rmb. She started it at 120 and I got it down to 60, oh joy! I’d say that would be an accomplishment, well done!
The bad thing about China is all those mosquitoes. I probably have at least 10 now and they stink quite the bit. I guess it would help if I started using my bug spray…but I just put tiger balm on and they stop itching for a little, until I have to put some more on. Oy.
Last night a bunch of went out into the bar/clubbing scene of Shanghai. Let me tell you, there’s a lot of creepy guys out there! But I’m sure you knew that already. Thank you to Sabrina for saving me many times!:)
Windows
This was a sign we saw at the sports bar we went to called Window’s. We got a pretty good kick of the sign.
I’m still working on that dorm video…and finding a bike. Tomorrow we start registration. I’m quite confused on what’s going on. On our admission notice, it says that we’re part of the UC-Fudan program. But we haven’t received a schedule yet…of course. So we’re going to head over around 7:30am to figure out what’s going on because registration starts at 8:30am. The UC students are actually getting an orientation along with a boat ride. I want to go! So hopefully that’ll work out. I suppose that’s it for now. I’m pretty tired so I’m going to head to bed. Zai jian!

"China is the safest place on earth!"
Saturday, September 1st, 2008
Really? You think so? I think not! The other night Marisa and I met these 2 guys in my kitchen, both from the US who had also spent their summer here for the language program, who claimed that they felt a lot safer in China than the US. Just yesterday we met this girl who went out one night and had her purse stolen, which had lots of money, credit cards, her social security card, a Louis Vuitton journal, a nano ipod, and I’m sure lots of other valuable items, stolen from her. From my experience, I would say it’s not THAT safe. I always keep my bag in front of me as if I’m hugging a baby:)
So it’s definitely been a few days since I’ve written. I’ve just been so tired after my longs days that I usually just pass out. I’m still in disbelief that I’m actually here. I feel like I’m just in Chinatown again, but not hah. So we were told that we started orientation yesterday, but guess what! There is no orientation! We start registration on the 3rd and 4th. From there I’m not sure what happens. Talking to some other people, we have a language placement on the 6th and classes start the 10th. But that might not be true. There’s been lots of miscommunication between the W+J and Fudan and it doesn’t seem like either one of them know what’s going on. So in the mean time, we’ve met a lot of people and have been exploring Shanghai. We actually met a lot of people from University of California. There’s about 40ish of them here? maybe more? But they’re pretty cool. I’ve also met these 2 guys from Cambodia that are pretty awesome. From the people I’ve met, apparently I’m pretty young for the program. I’ve only met one other international student who is 20. The ages range from people to people. Most I’ve met are 22-ish and the oldest I’ve met is 30, and he’s from Spain. But overall, it’s been pretty amazing meeting and hanging out with everyone. The other night we (as in Marisa and I) went out with a group of people to this Tibetan coffee shop. It was really unique and nice inside. I ordered this mint coffee drink, but it tasted like coffee, ick. (I don’t really like coffee) But it was a great experience.

Isn’t it pretty inside? I would have to say so!
Yesterday, we went with a bunch of people into Shanghai to see the Bund. Here’s an intro!
Alright…the video doesn’t seem to be loading…so in the meantime, if you want to check it out, it’s on facebook. Otherwise, just give me some time to figure it out.
But here are some pictures on our night out last night.
We also took the metro into the city. That was complicated, but I think we figured it out! It took us awhile, but now we know for next time.
Squid on a stick!
This is Juan and Sabrina with squid on a stick!
Dinner
This is the restaurant we went to last night. It was really nice and the food was really good. There was 7 of us all together, 4 girls and 3 guys so we had to split up. I discovered, always bring napkins with you. They don’t give them to you, and when you ask for them, they said they would be 1 RMB. What?!? I’m not paying for a napkin! We decided shirts would do. We were dirty and sweaty anyway, why not!
The Pearl
This is how pretty Shanghai is at night! We walked on the Bund to the river to see the Pearl. Am I right? Then I realized, I’ve been here before! I’ll clue you in on a few things about me, I’m really bad at names, and that’s all names in general. So if I call something wrong, just let me know!
I
As you can see, everyone loves Shanghai. Speaking with people, I’ve learned that Shanghai is a lot more structured than Beijing. So I’m glad I decided on Fudan! By the time we got back last night, we were pretty much dead.
I wanted to do my laundry today, but realized it’s Saturday and it seems that the laundry service is closed so I can’t buy a laundry card. Boo. I hope I don’t run out of clothes. So instead, we went to lunch at this Korean restaurant with a bunch of people. The food was quite fabulous. Probably the best thing I love about China is…the food! It’s quite delicious! Then we went with our friends Monica and Susan and got massages. I’ve never had a massage before, so it hurt a lot. But I was probably also really tense. And I had a pretty good conversation with the masseur. My Chinese is decent I suppose, a lot better than I thought! Now we’re just chilling and we’re probably going to explore the night life. It’s a pain to load all my pictures on here, so I’m going to load them on Picasa or something like that. And I’ll also try to find out how to load video’s on here as well. And I’ll get the dorm tour soon!

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007
It’s only 6:30pm and I’m feeling pretty tired. So roaming the hallways wasn’t much help this morning. And it was pouring. I asked directions to the bank to exchange and the supermarket, but it was raining really hard so I decided to just sit in the lobby. One of these entries, I’ll make a video and give you a tour of the dorm. But so I’m sitting in the lobby and trying to listen for people who speak English. No luck. Instead this girl from Mexico comes up to me and makes me record how to say 1-10 in Chinese. Then this Korean girl comes over and we make conversation and soon enough we have another Mexican and another Korean. If I knew their names, I’d tell you, but I seem to have forgotten. But since we’re so diverse, we had a translator in 3 different languages. The girl from Mexico doesn’t understand Chinese, so the Mexican guy (God? I think that’s what he said his name was, or similar to, but we call him God anyway) translates everything in Spanish for her. And then one of the Korean girls doesn’t speak English, so the other Korean (Gina) translated what we said in Korean to her. Good thing we’re all at least bilingual! But soon enough, we’re chatting up a storm and then we go out for lunch.
First Lunch
So here we have my first friends that I went out to eat with. It’s God, me, then Gina, Mario, and…I’m sorry, I forget her name…i have a bad memory. But lunch was good! Then the girls went to do registration stuff because they’re in the masters program and the guys took me to wal-mart to do some shopping! God is actually 28 years old and majoring in journalism and Mario is 20 years old and he’s actually a professor this term teaching spanish to Chinese people. Impressive! So we were in wa-mart and we passed this ad, Jackie Chan has his own shampoo!
Jackie Chan
Some reason, it’s side ways , I’ll figure it out, but other than that I think it’s pretty sweet. So after that, we went back to the dorms and hooked my internet up, which is why I get to write my blog! I took a shower, and the water is pretty smelly. Ick. I’m going to try to figure out how to do my laundry too. But before that, first things first! I’m taking a nap. zzzz…

I’m still in disbelief, but I’m actually here. I’m actually in China and it seems like a dream. I got to JFK about 10:30pm Monday night but it didn’t take off until 1:30am on Tuesday. Thanks to everyone who kept me company!:) and sorry to those I didn’t get to talk to. I’m also scared of flying, but it actually wasn’t as bad this time. Maybe because I took those motion sickness pills (thanks Julie!). But I slept for most of my flight. I would say for at least 9 hours straight and then I took a nap after watching The Prestige. It was a pretty good movie I thought. But as soon as I got on that plane, I basically passed out. And what do you know! The plane wasn’t filled and I had the 4 middle seats to myself. As I was about to sprawl out on the chairs and make a comfy bed, this guy came and took over my free chairs. I wasn’t too happy about that but I managed to steal at least one of them back. There was also this guy who had the window seat to the left of me that was really retarded. He smoked in the bathroom and made the fire detector go off. That was a disaster. He claimed that he use to be able to smoke in the bathrooms, even though there were signs ALL over the place saying no smoking.
But anyway, after I got off the plane, I went through customs and claimed my luggage. Let this be a warning to you know, never do what I did. Plus I knew I wasn’t suppose to, it seemed to happen so fast. That’s why I don’t like flying alone. But thank goodness I’m okay and writing my story. So I got my luggage and I’m thinking, wow my mom is so smart …not. She booked my flight so I would get here at 4:30am, when no one is awake. Good job. So I’m thinking should I just chill at the airport or should I just go to Fudan and see what’s going on. So I sat for about 5 min. because I started getting creeped out. Chinese men are CREEPY! So then I decide, alright I’ll grab a taxi and get to the school. So I’m on my way to the taxi line when this guy comes up to me and asks me where I’m going and I’m like…taxi. Yea…I forget how to say it in Chinese. But then he’s like, I’m your cab. And I’m like uhh…no that’s okay. And I think everyone knew I was kinda freaked out by all this but no one did anything and the guy took my luggage and the address in my hand and I was like, crap. So I follow him and I’m thinking, well I know some kung-fu. I could slice him, plus whatever I learned from those women defense classes. So he takes me into this elevator and I’m like oh no, I’m doomed. But nothing happened, he asked me if I came from Japan and I said no, I was from the US. Maybe I should have told him I was from Japan. Then he led me to this scary car far far away. I was trying to get my luggage back because where he led me, I actually say the legit taxi drivers. But too late. He through my stuff in the trunk and I’m thinking…where’s that bug spray…I could spray it in his eye. But it was in my suitcase, so no luck. So I’m the car and he tells the driver to take me to Fudan. 5 min. into the drive the guy stops the car, and I’m thinking…crap. But only to realize that he didn’t know how to get to the school. So he takes out his maps and starts asking me all these questions about the location. How am I suppose to know? I just flew here! But it takes him about 10 min. to figure out where we’re suppose to go and in the mean time I’m trying to figure out how to say turn around and take me back to the airport. But no luck. So then he continues driving. Please keep in mind that Chinese people also have the reputation as being one of the worse drivers. And so it lives. This guy was seriously a scary ass driver. He would weave in and out, take 2 lanes, cut trucks off, and at one point, he accidentally took the wrong turn, so he backed up! I thought that was the end. Phew. But I’m still here! I thought he was going to take me somewhere else than the school. He kept asking me questions, and then resulted in the comment, Americans have money. And I think, crap, he’s going to rob me! And then another comment later on, you’re really pretty. And I’m just like shit. So my hearts pounding and I’m thinking, I need to get out of here. But we finally arrive at the school, THANK GOODNESS! He tells me the trip is 250 RMB but I point out that it’s only suppose to be 170 RMB but he said it’s not his call. Plus he wouldn’t give me my luggage in his trunk if I didn’t give him the money. I’m thinking I’ll sacrifice the $10 US difference in order to keep my life. Then he has the guts to ask me for a tip, and basically I was like hell no. You overcharged me and you didn’t know how to get here. So I basically just walked away and then there were security guards, SAFE! So I went to the international dorms and registered. I’m in room 1835. It’s not too bad. Pretty roomy and they provided sheets, pillows, and a blanket. I’m on the 18th floor of 23? By the time I was settled it was 6:30pm and not a soul in site. So I took a nap and woke up and went roaming to try to find some life. No luck again, so here I write this entry. By the time I find out how to get the internet, I’ll probably post another entry as well. And ew, the water smells. Just thought I’d share. So I’m off to find some people again to try to get some guidance. Until next time, I’ll try to make smarter decisions.

So…right now you would expect me to be on a plane flying over the Pacific Ocean or something cool like that…but I’m not. So I was at my last day of work getting everything situated when I got a call from my sister that my mom changed my flight. It’s a long story and lots of complications, but I had fixed and arranged everything the night before. But after that call, I had to come up with a new plan. But thank you to everyone at Prudential! You guys make my life a little easier. I’m moved out of my apartment and I’m home in Milford, PA. Yes! In Milford, so yes yes I’ll be calling those of you who may be around. Don’t worry. But now I won’t be leaving until Monday night. Technically Tuesday early morning (1:30am) but I have to be at the airport at 10pm Monday. So my cousin and sister came home for the day and they just left for school, so we had one final family lunch before we left. My parents got us all a coming home (since we don’t do that much)/going away cake but…it said happy birthday on it.
Cake
We all got a kick out of it…maybe it’s a “had to be there” moment. So, I’m now leaving the 27th and arriving in Shanghai the 29th. I was kind of disappointed because I was really looking forward to staying in my hotel I booked, but I won’t be. Instead, I’ll just go straight to Fudan. But to stay at the hotel is only $27 US a night, so hopefully sometime this semester I’ll make it there, because I do love hotels! Plus, I can always go with someone. My friend from Shanghai, who is in the US now, told me that a lot of girls call rooms in the hotels and told me not to pick up. Apparently they offer services to girls as well…ew. Everything seems stressful at the moment but as the time gets closer, I’m sure everything will work out. So for the next day, I’ll be home enjoying this 100 degree weather, ick, and hanging out with my siblings and friends. Hopefully, when Monday rolls around, I’ll be on my plane and off to China and that’s where I will write again. Until next time, enjoy the heat!

2 Days Before Departure
Tuesday, August 21st, 2007
I can’t believe where time has gone! It’s already Tuesday and tomorrow is Wednesday, and my flight leaves Friday! Less than 3 days before I get on that plane and fly to a land far far away. I haven’t even started packing! I tell myself…you’ll start packing…now. But that didn’t seem to happen. My apt. is still like it was before I went home this past weekend to say farewell to my friends and family. I’m living in the great NYC this summer while interning at Prudential and it’s definitely been a blast and an experience. I end my internship 5pm on Friday. I’ll get back to my apt. 6pm-ish and I need to be at the airport at 10pm, but my flight won’t leave until 1:30am Saturday. It’s a 15 hour straight flight! Ahhh! Not only do I hate flying, but I hate being cramped up in a small space. I hope I get the aisle seat. I’m packing one huge suitcase, that way I can buy lots of stuff over there to bring back. My departure is getting stressful. I feel kind of unprepared, but I’m sure everything will work out. I thought I’d write my first blog today to test it out, so leave comments! I’ll miss you all and I hope we can still keep in touch! Send me your address if you’d like a postcard:) I’ll try to send them out. And I hope you read my blog throughout this semester. I hope to inspire you with my travels and experience so perhaps some semester while you’re attending college, you will take advantage of the study abroad program! And I’d love to help in any way possible! I guess that’s it for now. Maybe I’ll finally start packing…
